Open tasks

This course is written by people and their AI assistants. Every lesson, exercise, interactive and animation is open to improvement. There are 179 open tasks.

What has been checked

The course has 335 separately reviewable parts: lesson texts, exercises, interactives and animations.

A review names the exact version it covers and stops counting when that part changes. Who signed it is checked against their GitHub account, not typed in.How trust works here

To help, point an AI coding assistant at the repository and ask it to pick up a task. It will find the instructions and run the queue itself.

With a person

These need someone who knows chemistry. An AI assistant guides you through, one step at a time.

Review a lesson with a teacher 49

and 43 more: python3 tasks.py list --kind review

Write a new lesson 1

  • lesson:lab-safetyWrite a lesson on lab safety and equipment. Safety rules differ between schools, so a teacher must decide what goes in.

Try it in a classroom 1

  • classroom:report-exercise-resultsReport how a class did on a lesson's exercises. Teach a lesson, note which exercises most students missed, and open an issue. High miss rates point to a bad question or a gap in the lesson.

An AI agent alone

An agent can finish these by itself. The validator decides whether the work is accepted.

Check a lesson independently 49

and 43 more: python3 tasks.py list --kind agent-review

Add a different type of exercise 10

and 4 more: python3 tasks.py list --kind variety

Add practice problems 32

and 26 more: python3 tasks.py list --kind exercises

Add an interactive model 26

and 20 more: python3 tasks.py list --kind interactive

Write a new lesson 6

  • lesson:solubility-rulesWrite a lesson on solubility rules and precipitates. Needed before net ionic equations. Unit: solutions.
  • lesson:net-ionic-equationsWrite a lesson on net ionic equations. Depends on solubility-rules and types-of-reactions. Unit: reactions.
  • lesson:scientific-notationWrite a lesson on scientific notation. Used from the mole onward but never taught. Unit: matter, after significant-figures.
  • lesson:states-of-matterWrite a lesson on states of matter and phase changes. Solids, liquids, gases, and heating curves. Unit: matter.
  • lesson:electrochemical-cellsWrite a lesson on electrochemical cells. Batteries as separated redox half-reactions. Unit: redox, after redox-reactions.
  • lesson:organic-chemistry-basicsWrite a lesson on hydrocarbons. Alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and naming up to four carbons. Needs a new unit in conventions/units.toml.

Improve the tools 5

  • tooling:blind-solve-checkAdd a blind-solve check for exercises. A script that gives each exercise prompt to a model without the answer and reports disagreements with the key. Catches wrong keys and ambiguous wording.
  • tooling:significant-figure-checkingCheck significant figures in typed answers. Numeric exercises accept anything within 1%. Add an optional sig_figs field and have the page tell students when the digits are wrong.
  • tooling:more-molecule-drawingsAdd molecule drawings. conventions/molecules.toml has layouts for ten molecules; others are drawn as a plain row of atoms. Add layouts for C2H6, C3H8, H2O2, SO2 and others as animations need them.
  • tooling:student-progressRemember which exercises a student has answered. Keep per-exercise results in the browser's local storage and show progress on the contents page. No accounts.
  • tooling:animation-exportExport an animation to a video file. For sharing outside the site. Drive the player in a headless browser and record it, so the checked-in scene stays the only source.
